My son, who is in the 1st grade, had head lice last week. Now that I have seen what an actual egg (nit) looks like and have gone through the treatment and nitpicking process, please feel free to contact me, Mary Shaltis, either by phone 404 659-0913 or by email mshaltis@yahoo.com if you need help identifying nits or just need some advice/support. It is important to let the teacher know ASAP and to keep looking for nits in the hair 7-10 days after treatment.

This website is a great resource for all things LICE. FAQs and photos of the little buggers. Note that empty egg shell is white, nits are brown. We purchased a great comb, "THE TERMI"NIT"OR" at CVS highly recommended. Unfortunately they package it with stuff you don't need, like spray but it is still worth it.
As Mary said what is most important is to be on the look out and that 10 day commitment.
